Fundamentals: Use your common sense and experience
Cooking basic meals that you love is key.
Scrolling my Instagram feed the algorithm wants to sell me supplements, neck strengthening devices, sneakers and I have to shut it off. I am tempted, but I try not to chase the magic bullet. Is my sleep OK? Am I cooking from ingredients I bought? Am I being consisted with the barbell?
Simplifying helps fuel consistency and consistency builds progress one choice, one day, one moment at a time. I see so many people chasing their ideal fitness goals and swear by the next big thing. I love YouTube but it can somethings make you feel deficient and the next trick is going to make everything perfect.
My strategy is to try methodologies that you are drawn to and take notice on how it affects you. Here are the three core methods I’ve applied to I try to maintain:
Big compound lifts: I use the Starting Strength guide for form, so low bar squat, deadlift, press. I add chins/pull-ups because I need more emphasis on my back to counter desk sitting. Multiple joint movements make my workouts more efficient. I try to keep my strength workouts to around 20 minutes. I’ve played around with rep schemes and I typically limit myself to two working sets at a pretty heavy weight.
Cook at/eat at home: Whole unprocessed foods in the buzzword, but if you shop and add your own amount of cooking oils to your dishes by preparing meals at home, you’ll end up eating more of what nature gives us. Just focus on not eating takeout for an extended time and see how you feel. Save eating out for socializing.
Meditation: I do about 12 to five minutes a day using the Insight Timer app. I have selected a few teachers that I like and I rotate through the ones that resonate with me. Gratitude is my focus and it helps me frame my day properly. This reduces stress ultimately, which helps keep everything else functioning well.
